On 22 April 2013 Victoria Stull, Chief Financial Officer of the Company, exercised options over 50,000 ordinary shares of 1p each in the Company (the “Ordinary Shares”) from the December 2009 grant at an exercise price of 13.9p per share (together the “Stull Option Exercise”). Launched by DDD Group in 2009, Yabazam is a revenue sharing platform dedicated to 3D content.  It is available on PCs via a website and LG and Samsung 3DTVs via an app which streams shorts, comedy, music videos, animations and other genres.

The company has just begun rolling out the Smart TV app to New Zealand, Poland and Russia bringing the total number of countries where the LG Smart TV Yabazam app is available to 17.

3D Focus has been informed that the Smart TV app has now been downloaded over 300,000 times, with over 400,000 3D trailer views in the past quarter alone.

In order to view the 3D photos, trailers, and movies provided on Yabazam, people need to download the TriDef 3D Media Player which also functions as a 2D to 3D photo and video conversion utility.

There is a wide variety of genres of the platform and talking to 3D Focus,  Yabazam Content Acquisition Manager Ariela Stern, said some are are more popular than others: “We have seen Sci-Fi and animations do really well but we haven’t seen so much success for comedy which makes sense.  It’s not as transferrable across all different countries but I think that is just as much of an issue in 2D.”

Yabazam faces competition from 3Doo and 3DGO! as well as a crowded Smart TV app market place but Ariela Stern believes Yabazam can still stand out: “It is competitive but variety is good and people always want more and more programmes.  What’s really nice is we really are the only 3D app that’s live across multiple platforms.  Its simple as there are no controls to figure out.  It automatically switches your TV to 3D mode and even detects your bandwidth, adjusting the resolution accordingly.

All these things make the user experience valuable and enjoyable.  Right now all 3D content is premium content; there is a desire and an appetite for it.  People want it and we do believe people are hungry for more content.”

Gadmei 3D tablet

Recently, DDD signed a deal with Gadmei to install the TriDef 3D video SDK to convert 2D videos into 3D on the E8-3D 8″ tablets.  They are expecteded to launch in this quarter and DDD will receive quarterly royalty revenues from Gadmei, based on the volume of 3D tablets shipped.

3D technology developer DDD posted an increase in annual turnover and profit driven by growing demand in the market.

The company achieved turnover of $8.6m for the year ended December 31st 2012, a 56% increase on the previous year’s $5.5m.

Adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) grew 132% to $3.2m from $1.3m. Gross margins improved from 25% to 37%.

Profit from continuing operations came to £1.3m, compared to a loss of $0.96m in 2011.

Chief Executive Christopher Yewdell said the company has experienced a rising trend towards 3D integration into TVs, PCs, smartphones and tablet devices.

Samsung, the biggest provider of 3D TV and the company’s chief customer, has signed a patent licence to use the firm’s intellectual property for a 2D to 3D conversion application aimed at the growing number of 3D consumer devices.

More than 15m products with DDD’s 2D to 3D solution were manufactured during the year.

DDD also launched the Yabazam 3D streaming movie service on Samsung and LG Smart TVs.

Yewdell said the group was now turning its focus to developing glasses-free 3D technology and extending its reach to tablets.

‘The way people are consuming the internet, video and games is changing,’ he told Sharecast.

The group also plans to enhance its Yabazam streaming service by adding new content, solutions to additional brands of Smart TV and expanding the service to new categories of 3D products including tablet PCsm, Yewdell concluded.

For the period, the firm reported pre-tax profit from continuing operations of $1.31 million versus a loss of $96 thousand a year earlier.

Profit after tax for the year stood at $764 thousand compared with a loss of $582 thousand last year.

On a per share basis, the firm posted earnings of 0.55 cents compared with a loss of 0.43 cents last year.

Revenue for the year witnessed an improvement at $8.62 million from $5.53 million posted a year earlier.
